Report of the British Doctors' and Dentists' Group

For recovering alcoholic and drug dependent doctors and dentists, and students

The group has a constant membership of about 800 nationally, which is surprising because the number of doctors who are treated in treatment centres appears to be increasing. On discharge many of them receive information regarding meetings. We know that a proportion of doctors attend Alcoholics Anonymous in preference to the BDDG groups and this partly explains why the group numbers do not appear to be expanding. Others appear to be quite happy without any support network, but this group has a greater tendency to relapse.

The Convention in Buxton was our 25th and we were able to entertain some of the original members who started the group in the RAC club. The Academic day was successul. Several members from the BMA from England and Scotland were present as were members of the NHS Executive, the Trustees of the Sick Doctors' Trust and Dr Peter Abraham of the MCA. The meeting as a whole was a great success and a small profit was made.

We have sixteen active groups in the Country and information can be obtained by telephoning the national secretary, Dr Paul R. Number 0777 164 22682. or through the Medical Council on Alcohol.
